Girl on Film

Patches Magazine, press for The Last Film (20 July 1983)

Two pages of an 80s magazine. On the right, various images of Jo (from 1989) are spread about and numbered. The first one is a close-up of Jo's face, without makeup, looking tired. The second has a hair stylist grabbing on Jo's hair, and Jo is laughing. The third shows the back of Jo's head with the hair stylist applying some product to Jo's hair. The fourth has a makeup artist applying blush to Jo's face, and Jo is nervously smiling. Her hair is slightly lighter than in the previous photos. The fifth has the makeup artist lining Jo's lips, with her face having more makeup on than the previous photo. The sixth and final photo has a close-up of Jo's face with full makeup, earrings, a lacy hairpiece, and an even more uncomfortable look on her face. On the left of the left page, and the captions of the photos, is text which is transcribed below.

GIRL ON FILM

Not so very long ago, Jo Wells from Kissing the Pink changed her image, and it was all thanks to Patches! With a little help from Ocean Boulevard Salon and Mary Quant Cosmetics, we waved our magic wand and gave Jo a brand-new look...

When we met Jo, she looked really tired — the success of Kissing The Pink's single "The Last Film" had obviously meant lots of lost beauty sleep! "I didn't sleep a wink last night," she told us, yawning. "There was a party on for the group, which was great, but it went on so late none of us got to bed!"

We took an exhausted Jo to Ocean Boulevard Salon on London's Current Garden to see what could be done to fresh her up a little!

Stepping into Ocean Boulevard is like stepping into another world. All the staff dress in their own way, but they're not so wrapped up in their image that they forget to make you feel welcome. Everyone was really friendly.

We were introduced to Frizz, the stylist who was going to do Jo's hair and, as you can see, she enjoys dressing up pretty colourfully herself!

Jo's hair is very short, especially at the sides, but Frizz assured us that she'd still be able to do something really special.

First of all, Jo's hair was bleached into shape, with the hair at the nape of her neck being wisped to give a soft but spiky effect. Next, it was time to bring a touch of colour, with Golden Highlights, Fire Red Crazy Colour was applied to hair of the top half of the back of the neck.

All the colouring work complete, the salon's own extra-strong setting gel was fingered through the hair to help it stay in shape. Frizz added a crazy coloured hair-piece to Jo's own hair to give a really individual look, which also emphasized the wispiness.

MAKING UP

First things first, Sue Dennis from Mary Quant cleansed Jo's skin very thoroughly with the help of products from The Skin Basics Range.
Jo's foundation was then applied, using the Biscuit shade from Photo Finish contours. Her face was shaped and shaded using the Blushbaby cheek colours. Paprika and Plum Bell Pink. Cocoa Smudge Stylewriter outlined the eyes and lids were coloured with shades of ? and to the pink cloner. Loads of lush mascara helped to give a wide-eyed look.
The last stage was Jo's lips. These were outlined using ? shaped with Bloody Mary lipstick and glossed with Grapeshine lip gloss. Our verdict: Amazing! Jo's verdict: "I can't believe it's me!"

Notes

I did not like transcribing this at alllllll she looks so miserable. Unfortunately the internet has failed me when trying to look up these various 80s British makeup brands so unless someone with a copy uploads a higher quality scan, we're stuck with the reds.
